With the process of deleting weight and forced inducting on the Crimson Miata, we opted to delete the factory power steering pump and steering rack.
Of course, you can just delete the power steering pump and cap the lines running to the pump, however, your steering will actually suffer due to the fluid inside of the pump. An alternative to purchasing a used non-factory equipped power steering rack is to modify the rack itself. We opted to modify the rack due to a lack of available parts in our area.
The process itself isn’t too complication, you just need some patience and accessibility to some odd-ball parts. First things first is to the remove the steering rack itself.
I’ll link you to Greg’s video, which is actually very thorough for removing the rack and the general process. I’ll just include some minor tips that we did differently.
No offense Greg, but we opted for a little more security than the JB weld inside of the holes, although we still used JB weld lol.
NA6 / NA8 1990-1995, your sizes will be (4) M12x1.0, (1) M14x1.5x and (1) M16 x 1.5.
We were able to locate the M14x1.5 and M16x1.5 at our local ACE Hardware, however, we could not locate a M12x1.0 anywhere in town. We opted to cut the factory lines at the flare nuts and fill the void with JB weld. If you have a little more forethought than us, you’ll be able to locate everything on eBay for a good deal.
Was it worth it? Absolutely the steering is amazing and the Miata is such a light car, you don’t need powersteering. Even you, Mr. Chicken Arms.
